We went to the grocery store today
in Cobourg
in the old mall
to buy chocolate bars
because we’re pigs
because they’re only fifty-nine cents
and that’s a great deal.
There was an ambulance out front when we pulled up.
Then the Fire and Rescue truck showed up too.
Something bad was happening inside the mall.
We went inside and saw it
there in front of the grocery store
but it didn’t look that bad
but we couldn’t see that well
but there was a gurney and someone on it
and men and women in blue uniforms
some fussing, some standing around it
some concerned and some pretending.
We went inside and to the chocolate.
I bought her one Smarties, one Snickers, one Mars
and me two Snickers, one Mars
and coming through the checkout
we could see the scene
much better now.
We had to walk beside the gurney
and saw her tiny
and covered in a blanket
a small bundle fastened down.
We saw a bit of little grey face
and hair
and she was saying
in a small and lonely voice
“All I want to do is go home.”
